✝️ Prayer & Liturgy
“The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed, and the font from which all her power flows.” – Sacrosanctum Concilium
At St. Wulstan’s and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Churches, prayer and liturgy are the heart of our parish life. Through the celebration of the sacraments, daily prayer, and active lay involvement, we gather to encounter the living presence of Christ and grow together as a worshipping community. We strive to make each liturgical celebration meaningful, reverent, and spiritually nourishing for people of all ages and stages of faith.
Celebration of the Sacraments
The sacraments are central to Catholic life and mark sacred milestones in our journey of faith. We celebrate the sacraments with deep reverence and careful preparation:
Baptism: Welcoming new members into the Body of Christ. Baptism preparation sessions are offered for parents and godparents.
First Holy Communion & Reconciliation: Children are prepared through parish catechesis in partnership with our Catholic schools.
Confirmation: Young people deepen their faith and receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit in this joyful sacrament of maturity.
Marriage: Engaged couples are guided through marriage preparation courses rooted in Catholic teaching and relationship enrichment.
Anointing of the Sick: Offered to those who are ill, elderly, or facing surgery, this sacrament brings comfort, peace, and spiritual healing.
Funerals: We accompany grieving families with pastoral care and beautiful liturgies that honour the life of the departed and the hope of resurrection.
Children’s Liturgy
Our Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers young children an age-appropriate experience of the Sunday Gospel during part of the Mass. Through storytelling, discussion, and interactive prayer, children are introduced to the message of Jesus in a way that is joyful, engaging, and accessible. This ministry encourages children to grow in faith and participate actively in the life of the Church from a young age.
Liturgical Ministers
Liturgical ministers serve with reverence and dedication, helping to create a prayerful and ordered environment for all parish liturgies. These include:
Lectors (Readers): Proclaim the Word of God with clarity and devotion during Mass.
Welcomers/Greeters: Provide a warm and friendly welcome to parishioners and visitors.
Offertory Collectors and Presenters: Assist in bringing the gifts to the altar.
Liturgical ministers receive training and ongoing support to help them serve with confidence and grace.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers)
Eucharistic Ministers assist in the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass and often extend their ministry by visiting the sick and housebound. This sacred role involves bringing the true presence of Christ to others and is an expression of deep reverence and love for the Eucharist.
Sacristan Ministers
Sacristans prepare the sacred vessels, vestments, altar linens, and books needed for each liturgy. Their quiet, diligent work ensures that every celebration flows smoothly and is conducted with reverence. Sacristans often arrive early and stay late, serving with devotion behind the scenes.
Altar Servers
Altar servers play a vital role in assisting the priest at the altar. This ministry is open to children and young people who have received their First Holy Communion. Serving at the altar encourages attentiveness, discipline, and a greater appreciation of the Mass. Servers carry the cross, candles, and incense, and assist in setting up during the liturgy.
Musicians and Choir
Music uplifts the soul and enhances the beauty of our liturgical celebrations. Our musicians and choir members lead the congregation in hymns, psalms, and responses, helping all to participate fully in sung worship. Whether playing an instrument or offering their voices in song, they make a vital contribution to the sacred atmosphere of the Mass.
If you would like to become involved in any of our prayer or liturgical ministries, please speak to Fr. John Waters or a member of the parish team. Training, guidance, and support are always available.
